My policy concerning nature is to never interfere unless I must. Often I must. When our first nest of bunnies this year was found by our dog, my husband yelled at her to drop the (unharmed) bunny. I searched for an hour to find the nest and put the baby back where he belonged. I checked for a few days to be sure the mom was coming and going. Now there are tiny bunnies in every garden
The most recent bunny nest is out in the middle of the yard.
I found this nest before the dog did, and put a few layers of fence around it. Again, I checked for a few days so I knew the mother was visiting and feeding her babies, and I hadn’t scared her off with the fencing.
But this afternoon, we saw an adult bunny that had been killed by a car. We’re really hoping it’s not the mom of any babies.I put this marking over the nest, so I can tell tomorrow if mom has been by. I’m really hoping she has, because I don’t want to be faced with a nest full of hungry babies.
THE NEXT DAY: When I first checked the nest this morning, the X of straw was still there and I was crushed. I assumed that the mom hadn’t been there. But then I checked the picture I had taken last night, and nothing was the same. The X wasn’t at right angles, as it is in the first picture. There was no visible fur, and that brown and green leaf was nearly buried. So if anyone ever is faced with a similar situation, taking a picture is a great idea. The changes are subtle.
Hoping momma makes an appearance tonight.

I’m partial to bunnies because we’ve had two pet bunnies, but I’ve never had to deal with them in the yard. I know some folks have real challenges with them eating their gardens. 🙂 I hope all of yours are doing okay.

You know, I’ve never had too much trouble with rabbits eating too much of my garden. I think the dog is enough of a presence that they are kept at bay. (You’d THINK they’d nest elsewhere . . .)

And the nest was different – so yay!

Uh-Oh! I hope not too! How hard is it to hand rear baby bunnies? That’s what I’d be wondering and researching……..
I really love your gardening philosophy! How’s the summer of Jodie going? I’m really interested xo

I DID research it, Pauline, and I was REALLY happy to see that the nest had been changed. I would have tried to call in some expert because it sounds like it’s nearly impossible to do right.
The summer of Jodie is going well. I have made a point to slow down and do what I want more often, and guess what? I’m still earning a living and my house is still livable. The only difference is that I’m happier. Lesson learned. : )

It’s somewhat unbelievable how easy it is, when you really get it isn’t it. Good job! ❤

I could revert back to being a maniac at any moment – but so far so good. : )

I share your philosophy. The Head Gardener doesn’t. Mind you, she wouldn’t commit bunnicide

Bunnicide. LOL I wish I could disregard the backyard creatures just a bit more than I do. Heartache is always around the corner. But not today!

Oh, boy! Hope the mother comes back. Bottle feeding bunnies would be a lot of work. Keep us posted.

Good point about taking pictures. Can’t help feeling that your poor dog has been cast as the villain of the piece for doing her job and protecting your garden from rascally rabbits. I worked on a farm where we had to re-sow 10 acres after rabbits grazed the sprouting crop so I’m not entirely a rabbit fan.

Oh, we know Riley is just doing what dogs do, we don’t blame her. We just feel protective of all the little critters in our yard. I’m sure I’d have a different attitude if gardening were anything more than a hobby for me. Those guys can EAT!
