birding

As per normal, my life contains way more than my blogging might suggest. Most of my posts remain in my head, but this event is worth sharing.

During the migration season, on my brother’s birthday, my mom and I met my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew for a day of birding near the Susquehanna River. It’s almost like cheating to go birding with my brother, Dave, and Collin. They know bird songs. So they say “Oh, that’s a yellow-billed-cuckoo singing, look over there.” And we see a yellow -billed -cuckoo.DSC_0105DSC_0108 (2)

This is also how we spotted the black and white warblerDSC_0009

And this is Lisa.  Did I mention it rained much of the day?DSC_0021

I spotted this Canada goose family on my own. Love that row of fluffy babes.DSC_0130

Then we went to the nearby Conowingo Dam.DSC_0147

As we looked through binoculars, we realized that at the basin of the dam, there were hundreds of cormorants and bald eagles. I have never seen so many bald eagles at one time.DSC_0172 (2) There are at least seven bald eagles in this one zoomed in picture. Everywhere I looked, there was a similar count. It was awesome.DSC_0173_LI

It was a good day.

  1. Wow! Wow, wow, wow! What a great day! And that black and white warbler!!! I have never seen one of those, but once I saw its blue version, the Cerulean Warbler. Those eagles. That’s amazing. Thanks for posting this. It’s fun to be with birders who know calls and where to look.

  2. Wow, what a great day birding, Jodie. I’m envious that you had a knowledgeable guide. I only know the basics and have to learn the warbler calls all over again every spring, weak retention to say the least! 😉

  3. You call it ‘birding’! I’m constantly learning new American English 🙂 I am so envious you have a knowledgeable arm (ear?) in your family who can listen to birdsong and identify the singer. Back in the 90’s I had a CD with all our bird song on and identifiers, by the time I’d played through three or four songs I’d forgotten what the original song sounded like…… I need that app Derrick mentioned! You all had a wonderful time despite the rain it seems – what a great way to spend a birthday!!

    • Pauline – isn’t it fascinating the different expressions and uses in the same language? I love what I learn about that from my blogging friends. That app sounds like just what I need, as well. My brother and his son have amazing talent that they have worked hard at – I admire it so much, and birding with them is an amazing experience!
