I am proud of my brother, Dave, for many reasons. Most recently, I am proud of him for this. This is his cabin in the Maine woods. It’s made of recycled materials, creativity, and guts.
This is the loft – and a view of the lovely roof work. See my mom up there? She scampered up that ladder like a teenager.
This is the room under the loft. That’s a large bunk bed under the mosquito netting.
You can see the quilt I made for the cabin in this view. i am a quilter
(Here is the quilt, for those that requested a better view.) Thank you.
Here is the back porch with it’s reclaimed-from-an-old-dance-studio parquet floor.
And here is the kitchen. The cabin has electricity – and a refrigerator – but no running water.
So there is a composting toilet. That’s a bucket of sawdust to help the process along.
This is the shower room. You heat up some water (from the nearby spring) and go for it. The little plastic cup helps.
I was so awed to stand in this house and see the work and love and creativity that Dave and his family put into it. I hope you are as impressed as I am with this amazing creation.
I sure am! ❤ !!

Isn’t it amazing, Pauline? They are still working on it (Dave installed a bunch of windows before we got there.) but the hardest bits are done.

You are SO right about the smell!!! How did you know? I was just in love with the way it smelled – warm wood, indeed.

My grandparents house and every cabin I’ve ever stayed in had that lovely smell…

Your brother has skills and determination. Applause on this huge accomplishment. I want to hear more about how they get their water. The rest of it makes good common sense. 🙂

Skills and determination, indeed. I think Lisa still has nightmares about him up there putting the roof on. Luckily, the neighbors were very helpful. I never got water with them, but as I understand it, they take 5 gallon jugs in a wagon to the near-by spring and fill them up for cooking and washing dishes. They are also close to a “pond” (a lake to me) that has no motor boats allowed. So it is very clean. A swim in there feels like a bath. Unless you fall out of a kayak into a lot of sand. Not that I know anything about that..

I’m past the years of hauling water, but I applaud their efforts and strong backs. 🙂 Many a time when I was a child I took a timely trip to the brook to save the well water. 🙂

FANTASTIC CABIN, WHAT ARE THE VIEWS LIKE FROM IT? CHINA

They are in the middle of woods. It’s very remote – nothing is visible except the trees – and a porcupine who lives in the yard.

It was the first time I ever saw a porcupine. They move very slowly – I guess they aren’t afraid of much. He just wandered towards us until he found a suitable tree and then he climbed up to keep an eye on us.

Aw, thank you, Clare. When I knew he was going to make the cabin, I thought he needed a bit of homemade comfort and love.

What a beautiful cabin! Really, it is a cabin among cabins. You have every right to be proud of your brother. And the quilt looks splendid.

Beautifully made cabin, Jodi! Your brother is quite the craftsman!

Craftsman is the word, exactly, Lavinia. He’s a Science teacher – but he also has the skills of a carpenter.

Fantastic, makes my Carpentry students look like wood butchers haha. Well done ‘brother.’

That’s high praise from a real carpenter. Thank you. I think Dave’s wife still has nightmares of him putting that roof on by himself.
